Getting it out there to the Schools and Youth Groups
We are currently working on messaging all of the Schools and Youth
Groups in the USA to let them know about "New Sport" and to get them involved
with it. The initial post on this Musings Page on
11/08/2023 gives a
pretty decent outline of the organized chaos driven aspect of the sports
development but it hasn't been pointed out that the initial teams that have been
set up to be claimed are only representative of one league. It is totally
possible, and allowed, that entirely separate or even parallel leagues can be
created. There is only talk of one currently because trying to set 150 teams set
up from the start is a task in itself without worrying about expanding the
macrocosm and microcosm of the possibilities, haha.
Generally, as it is seen right now, getting New Sport into the
familiarity with the youth is way more important than trying to get the adult
sports fans.
I'm not suggesting that adults don't play sports, I'm just saying
most adults are probably too busy to be dedicated to a league and multi-stage
competitions.
And yet again, because most of New Sports rules are settled in the
negotiations, a league that settles its matches with 1 game a year could be
totally conceivable.
We were asked about merchandise and licensing and other "Official Team"
things. That is an aspect when a team wants to have "Official Status" such as
being recorded and being part of the "Official Network" here.
We have a loose template for that situation but yes, we will want
something to help us operate and promote better.
Of course, people could totally just use this game set up and set up
their own unofficial games, just for the sake of having fun.
I think that would be where most people should want to start, to get an
idea of the possibilities by getting creative with their own prototype games.

General Rambling About The Abstract Event
It's called "New Sport" because every season it is
a new sport. The competing teams need to have negotiators decide the new rules
and methods of competing. Elements from other sports can be incorporated, or
entirely new schemes can be drawn up. Aside from the usual "players competing on
the field" competitive aspect, the competitive aspect is also in the the
organizational structure. Adding a few limitation, and the required use of a
random number generator for important decision making aspects, should add an
interesting amount of problems to solve in the Organizational level. There are
plenty more challenges that have been implemented and their effects might not
seem significant at first but "New Sport" is not about putting together "the
perfect teams" and "going into a competition with the best you can find"...
this is about "going into a competition with what is available" and "making the
best of it".
Not only is Team Creation part of a random draw, but when teams compete
the draw is shuffled again and members between teams are switch between teams.
Additionally, many other sports have other filtering processes potential
candidates need to run through. School sports probably being the biggest filter,
an ever decreasing pool of eligible participants until you have the smallest
pond filled with the biggest fish for a handful prospectors to try to recruit
from. Well, not with "New Sport".. Anyone eligible to play sports is
able to sign up and has the same chance as anyone else to be picked, because
these choices are made by a Random Number Generator. Having a player sign up who
does nothing but try to hone their athletic abilities all day would be great if
they made it into the pick, but it could be anyone.
I would suggest that if you, as a potential player, sigh up to be in the
drawing that you make sure you are ready for it and get in shape.. but there's a
problem.. When you sign up, you aren't completely sure what kind of competition
you could be signing up for. Sure, if this was one of the other sports you could
practice specialize your training to specific aspects, but you may find yourself
in a competition where it is some kind of hybrid sport where there are elements
of 5 other sports.
Additionally, the team you practice with and develop working friendships
in might not be the team you end up playing on when the time comes. Mixing the
teams at the last moment will probably throw off communication. Will the
"switched players" choose to give it all they got, in order to increase their
own stat records... or will they not try as hard. As a player, I'm pretty
sure that they would want their recorded stats, which will be viewable publicly,
to look as good as possible.. but will they be willing to do so at the cost of
their "main teams" loss? When looking back at all of the participants stats will
the public see the highest ranking players as "great competitors" or "traitors
against their own team"? These type of social/moral dilemmas are just more bits
of uncertain chaos built into the rules.
Imagine with me.. we have 50 States, each state has 3
"official teams". On a State Level they are competing against each other and in
every state, there are competitions being held within the "league" that looks
completely different than each other. There is always one common factor though,
there is always winners and losers. In a similar way that the State Level
arrangement is set up, so too is the National Level. The 50 States are randomly
put into two Teams, and again the process of creating a "New Sport" needs to be
done.. but now it is more complicated because you have 25 organizational
structures trying to negotiate something with another group of 25 organizational
structures.
Sure, we will all have a great time watching the actual competitions, but
just getting things structured will be something like a competition as well..
at that level it will be almost like a "Management Sport". I think it would be a
bit obvious right now to point out that the team that has the better management
skills will be have the better team since they will be better equipped to take
what the draw has given them and quickly do something with it while the team
with the weakest management skills will no doubt suffer from their own team
mates doing something as basic as... not showing up to the game.
With the knowledge that the teams will be scrambled for each competition,
how will the management deal with these inevitabilities?
I think it will be interesting to watch how the story unfolds across the
season.
I would love to start throwing together creative ideas on how games
could be set up, but that is up for the teams management to establish every
season. It could be very simple to very complex.. perhaps a card game,
perhaps a gauntlet, or maybe something familiar with some unique twists
sprinkled in there.
I tried coming up with several other names but they were just too
suggestive, and I wanted to leave it more open to debate as to what it should
be, it is just "New Sport" because it can essentially be anything.
The "Official Website", rules, league, and all of that is just there to
give a bit of uniformity and to keep records to give a place for both teams and
individual players stats to shine.
Currently as I'm writing this everything is super fresh. Teams haven't
even been claimed yet and nobody has signed up and there are only a small group
of people who even know that this is happening.
If you want to participate you can sign up to the website here and
announce in the groups and forums that you are interested in being potentially
being picked to play. You have just as much chance at being picked as anyone
else so, if you sign up.. you might want to get in shape because you won't know
what kind of competition you will be getting into.
If you have more of a management knack or organizational interest you can
claim a team and start organizing. There is a lot of room for creativity in
this, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed dreaming it up for you.
